The tech giant Apple’s operating system, iOS didn’t have an official name until the release of the iPhone SDK in the year of 2006. They referred to their operating system’s version simply as OS X. At the very first, it was called iPhone OS. Then again, it was renamed as iOS in the year 2010.

iOS 1.X – The first version
- The first version of Apple’s operating system was released in the month of June in the year of 2007.
- This was the first version of the Apple’s operating system, which is now referred to as iOS widely by the masses.
- A series of upgrades in the first version, v1.0 were released.
- The last one of these was the v1.1.5, shortly after which came the version 2.0.
iOS 2.X – The second version
- Then came the iOS 2.x or the iPhone 2.0. This became available to the masses in the month of July, 2008. It was released at the very beginning in parallel with the release of iPhone 3G.
- Talking about upgrades, the devices running OS 1.0 to OS 1.1.5 are all specifically upgradable to the OS 2.0, much to the relaxation of the user.
- App Store was introduced in the iPhones for the first time via. this version of the iOS.
- Hence, the customers could now access the third party applications via. their apple devices.
iOS 3.0 – iOS 3.2
- Post-the iOS 2.0 phase, the iOS 3.0 was launched in the wake of the launching of iPhone 3GS.
- This was in the year 2009 in the month of June. Devices running the OS 2.X could be upgraded to this software.
- The final release in the iOS 3.0 was the 3.1.3 version where as the iPad was introduced with the 3.2 iOS.
The arrival of iOS 4.0
- The iOS 4 was made available to the public in the year 2010.
- This iOS provided support for all major devices such as the iPhone and the iPod Touch.
- This OS had all features such as the multitasking enabled so the iPhone 3G and the iPhone Touch had tremendous advantages but,
- Versions higher than this OS weren’t compatible in the iPhone and the iPod touch.
The iOS 4.2.1 released in 2010 was made compatible with iPad which expanded the consumer base significantly. This iOS was initially released via. the iPad 2. This was the last version which was supported by iPhone 3G and iPod touch, 2nd generation.
Oncoming of iOS 5.0
- Then with the coming of the iOS 5 came a new renaissance the Apple era.
- This was released specifically for iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4(GSM and CDMA), iPhone 4S, iPod Touch as well.
- It also supported the iPad. iOS 5.1.1 was the final release for this version of the iOS.
Then, there was iOS 6.0
- iOS 6 didn’t support a few older devices like iPod Touch, 3rd gen.
- The iPad, 1st gen also suffered a similar fate.
- The devices supported by the iOS 6 included the iPhone 3GS, the iPod touch, 4th gen and then the iPad 2.
- The iOS 6 has almost no support on iPhone 3GSM iPad 2 and iPod touch, 4th gen. 6.1.6 was the final release supported for the iphone 3GS and iPod Touch devices.
iOS 7 arrives
- The iOS 7 was announced in the year 2013 with the unveiling of iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S.
- This OS didn’t support the previous devices too such as the iPhone 3GS and the iPod Touch, 4th gen due to some hardware limitations and performance issues.
- From iPhone 4, iPod touch 5th gen and iPad 2 onwards, all devices were supported by this operating system.
Leading them all came the iOS 8.0
- In the year 2014, the release of iOS 8 was announced. At this moment, the iPhone 6 and the iPhone 6 Plus were unveiled too.
- Support for iPhone 4 was dropped. iOS 8 had limited support on the iPad 2, iPhone 4S and the iPod touch, 5th gen.
- All major updates from this one will receive public beta’s from now on. Current iOS version stands at 8.4.1 which managed to fix some glitches
- These glitches were mostly associated with iTunes and the patched TaiG jailbreak.
Finally there was the king, the majestic iOS 9.0!
- Finally came the most recent version which had gathered a lot of public attention, the iOS 9.
- Quite surprisingly, this time the Apple didn’t drop support for any device. All devices which had iOS 8 could be upgraded to iOS 9.
- With the release of the iOS 9, the iPad 2 became the first device to support six releases of iOS.
- The iPhone 4S, the iPod touch supported five and four major releases respectively.
- Although, iOS 9 has a limited support on iPad 2, the iPhone 4S, the iPad Mini 1st gen and the iPod touch 5th gen, it still hails as the leading the front-running iOS out there.
