PlayStation 4 Announcement Recap

As many of you know, on February 20th, Sony’s PlayStation conference has taken place. Building around it in the days prior, with lots of hype, was the release of the PlayStation 4.
The conference was being streamed live on the official PlayStation site, as well as YouTube. With over a million viewers tuning in, everybody was excited to see the next big innovation Sony had to offer its gamers. Although the conference showed no images of the PlayStation 4 itself, it was still very promising to say the least.
The conference began with Andrew House, who starts by telling the success stories of the PlayStation as a brand. Where it started, and how far it has come. Then he finally announces what everyone has been waiting for, the PlayStation 4.

With specs as follows:

  • CPU: 8-core x86-64 AMD Jaguar
  • RAM: 8GB GDDR5
  • Blu-Ray: 6x
  • USB: 3.0
  • Wireless: IEEE 802.11 b/g/n
  • Bluetooth: 2.1
  • Controller: 1000mAh DualShock 4
  • Camera: 1280×800 @ 60Hz

As you also have probably read above, he then proceeds to announce the new, and very innovative, DualShock 4. It comes packed with a touch pad, share button, and headphone jack. It has a new sensor camera, to track the pad. The share button looks promising, now you can live stream to your friends to get help on a game, record and instantly upload your videos, and share your gameplay stats and experiences on Facebook, Twitter and Google+. All and all, looks like the best controller thus far.

A few next-gen games were announced as well, some of which include:

  • Drive Club
  • Killzone: Shadow Fall
  • inFamous: Second Son
  • Watch Dogs
  • Destiny

To name some of the best.
Here is a list of the developers who were at the conference, and their presentations to go along with it.

1. Quantic Dream

The makers of Heavy Rain and soon to be Beyond Two Souls, showed up at the conference, and they offered a demo which shows the sheer power of the PlayStation 4.
The demo consider of a modeled face of an old man, it may not sound like much, but it was quite impressive. The details and quality were surrealistic.  You can check out the demo below.

2. Media Molecule

Then, one of my favorite producers took to the state, Media Molecule, to show a very impressive demo with the PS4 and PlayStation move. The showed a demo, where they were able to craft and sculpt 3D objects, and insert them into a game. Could this be LittleBigPlanet 3? Also, they showed these sculptures come to life, in a band performance, animated by the PS4, but ran by the move controllers. It was very creative, as Mm always is. Check it out below.

3. Blizzard Entertainment

Blizzard Entertainment showed up as well, to announce something nobody saw coming, Diablo III for the PS4, it has been a very long time since we saw Blizzard create games for consoles. As most people know, they have been a PC only game for awhile. But with the new PS4’s hardware, and limitations virtually non-existent, we may see many more Blizzard games arrive on the PS4. You can see the announcement below.

4. Square Enix

Then, Square Enix. You may know them from some titles like Final Fantasy and Just Cause. They get on stage to show Final Fantasy running under the new Luminous engine. And in true HD quality on the PS4, the game looks quite amazing. As I have enjoyed many Square Enix titles, I was excited to hear that they will be supporting the PS4. Hope that more titles from them come in the future. You can see the Square Enix presentation below.

The PlayStation 4 looks promising to say the least, new and excellent hardware, amazing features, and a ton of grade-A game developers to back them up, the PS4 will strive for many years. It will be interesting to see what Microsoft will have up their sleeve  it will be hard to beat Sony after this conference, but many Xbox fanboys hold out in hopes they will. We hope to see a lot more from Sony, and maybe even an unveiling of the PS4 itself, at this years E3.
If you want to see the entire press conference from beginning to end, go ahead and check out the video below.
